King was born in 1875 in Brosna, County Kerry , Ireland in enlisted in the Gloucester regiment on the 13th January 1899. He was posted with 2nd Battalion in 25th May 1899, promoted to Corporal in Pretoria in June 1901 and to Sergeant in 1902. He was discharged by purchase in December 1903.
