1882 Egypt Medal awarded and correctly named to Acting Conductor of Supplies F Stannard C&T Staff with Khedive’s Star 1882 unnamed as issued and copied service papers and medal roll showing entitlement.
Francis Stannard was born in 1844 and enlisted in the Royal Artillery in 1862. By July 1881 he had reached the rank of Battery Sergeant Major and his service had all been in the UK. On August 8th 1882 he transferred to the Commissariat and Transport Staff. On 12th September he was posted to Egypt where he qualified for the medals here (both noted on his record) and stayed for 44 days before returning home. He also served in South Africa between November 1884 and December 1885 and Bermuda from November 1889 to January 1894. He remained a conductor of supplies when the C&T became the Army Service Corps in 1888 and was discharged from the army in 1897 after 35 years and 88 days service.
During his time in the army he was married, widowed, remarried and had 13 children including 2 while he was stationed in Bermuda. He appears on the 1911 census (copy included) living in Christchurch in Hampshire with his wife and 6 of his children and lists his occupation as “army pensioner” . He was still living in Christchurch in 1939 when he died aged 95.
Certainly a life lived although it may be that with 13 children in tow he offers an insight into the supply issues that plagued the British Army in the 19th century.
The Small Print:
All coins, medals and other items I sell are genuine unless I have explicitly described them as otherwise, I have been selling on eBay for over 20 years and I guarantee this forever. If I sell you something as genuine that later turns out to be a forgery I will take the item back and refund you in full including all postage costs. There are a great many groups on social media sites with experienced collectors posting coins that you can look at which will help you learn to grade coins and offer advice on whether a coin is genuine or not. Don’t get caught out by fake coins. Feel free to copy any of my images to post on groups to get opinions on the actual coins I’m selling.
I’ve made every effort to provide good quality images of the items I sell but, with coins especially, there’s no substitute for having it in hand to examine it under a lens to assess it. If you buy anything from me and are disappointed when you receive it, for any reason, send it back in the same condition as it was received and I will refund you.
